DailyNews:Man kills friend over alleged affair with wife

The police in Ogun have arrested a 30-year-old panel beater, Wasiu Yusuf, for allegedly stabbing his friend, Adeolu Olatoye, to death in Abeokuta.

Another suspect in the alleged killing of the 32-year-old graphic artist, Mukaila Popoola, is currently on the run.

The suspect’s wife, 26-year-old Busayo, is also in detention at the Adatan Police Station.

The victim, the suspect and his alleged accomplice lived in the same premises before the incident.

Our correspondent gathered that Adeolu was allegedly killed by Yusuf and his accomplice in their residence in the Oke-Efon area of Abeokuta for allegedly having an affair with his wife.

Olatoye was said to have met his death barely two weeks after he named his new born child. The victim was also said to be making preparations for his mother’s 80th birthday.

Police sources disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to attacking the deceased when he visited his wife in their matrimonial home.

The suspect was said to have further claimed that the victim mistakenly stabbed himself during a scuffle between them while attempting to escape from his room.

But an eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, claimed that Olatoye had gone to his friend’s room on the middle floor of the two-storey building to give him an invitation card for his mother’s 80th birthday scheduled to hold on Saturday when the suspect allegedly attacked him with broken bottles.

The deceased’s elder brother, Akinyemi Olatoye, also insisted that his late brother had gone to his alleged attacker’s home to drop a copy of the invitation card for their mother’s birthday.

Akinyemi said his deceased brother and the suspect were bossom friends.

Confirming the incident, the acting State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the police were investigating the incident.

He said, “Information at our disposal is that the suspect met the deceased on his wife inside their room.”

DailyNews:Lagos fire doused 32-hour rage

The fire that ravaged the Great Nigeria House on Monday morning has been doused, 32 hours after it started.

The authorities have yet to identify the cause of the inferno which consumed three floors of the 25-storey building.

Olofofonimi Metro learnt that officials of the Lagos State Government and the Federal Fire Service worked through the night and were able to put out the inferno around 1.45pm on Tuesday.

Our correspondent had reported that the fire began around 5am on Monday.

The inferno left in its wake, destroyed property and goods estimated to be worth billions of naira.

Scores had also sustained varying degrees of injuries, with some of the victims being transferred to an undisclosed public hospital.

When our correspondent visited the scene on Tuesday, he observed a heap of burnt clothes, shoes and bags.

The three gutted floors were still smouldering, while thick black smokes could be seen coming from the building.

Three water trucks belonging to the state and federal government were seen combating the fumes both from inside and outside the complex.

It was learnt that over 50 trucks of water had been expended already.

All entrances to the building were cordoned off by security operatives, while adjoining market stalls were locked up.

PUNCH Metro spoke with one of the resident of the area, Mr Lateef Shita-bay, who said the building was constructed in 1982 by the Great Nigeria Insurance Company.

He said, “Ever since I heard about the fire outbreak yesterday, I decided to come here to observe things myself. The burnt area is for shops and offices. The fire started receding today before it was put off 1.45pm.”

The Chief Fire Superintendent of the Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Emmanuel Oladotun, said he had not been able to sleep since the previous day.

He said, “I have not been able to sleep. We have been working through the nights.”

General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency had called in the ministry of works and physical planning to make a full assessment of the damage done to the structure.

“We have also called the solid material testing agency to submit their report. We want to ensure people are safe. We appeal to our people to remain cool and call our emergency lines anytime they need us.”

The spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency, South West zone, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye said, “Because this is happening about three times in that same area, we are going to reassess the area and make recommendation to the Federal Government because this is a national matter.”

DailyNews:Fake drugs,Lawmakers prescribe life jail for offenders

Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal

The House of Representatives has proposed stiffer penalties for manufacturers, marketers and hawkers of counterfeit and fake drugs in the country.

Penalties can go as high as life imprisonment or a fine of N10m or both for manufacturers on conviction while those who engage in marketing such drugs and unwholesome processed foods, risk seven-year jail term or a fine of N5m.

These provisions were the highlights of a bill, which passed second reading at the House on Tuesday.

The “Bill for an Act to Amend the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods (Miscellenous Provisions) Act, Cap. C34, Laws of the Federation 2004 to Increase Penalties for Offences under the Act” was sponsored by a lawmaker from Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Bassey Dan-Abia.

Danbia argued that the current penalties for offenders were mild and that they allowed the offenders to get away with the serious crime of murder.

Dan-Abia, who described those who engaged in the act as “killers”, “murderers” and “destroyers of human lives,” said some of the extant provisions were as low as two-year jail term or a fine of N500,000.

Another lawmaker, Mr. Haruna Kigbu, told the House that people died daily due to intake of counterfeit and fake drugs.

“When the patient is sick and at the point of death what you need are drugs that can help their situation. But, when the drugs administered are fake, certainly the patient will not recover,” he stated.

DailyNews:Banks to identify customers by fingerprints next year

fingerprints scanner and Sanusi

The Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers Committee on Tuesday sealed a biometric solution pact with a German Firm, Dermalog, for the development of a payment system that would be driven by fingerprints.

The move, according to the Governor, CBN, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, will help to revolutionise the country’s payment system.

For instance, unlike the current practice where different instruments are used as means of identification, bank customers will from 2014 be identified through their fingerprints.

Sanusi, while speaking at the signing of the agreement, which was held at the central bank’s headquarters in Abuja, noted that the system would become operational on February 14, 2014.

The move followed the recommendation of a sub-committee chaired by the Group Managing Director, Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

The committee, made up of the Group Managing Directors of Access Bank Plc, First Bank of Nigeria Limited, United Bank for Africa Plc, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc and Skye Bank Plc, had shortlisted Dermalog as the company to develop a database for the banking sector.

Emefiele said, “The company that was awarded the contract has been given a very ambitious deadline, and before the contract was awarded, it agreed that it would deliver in 90 days.

“The first phase of the project will connect the central data to the banks as well as the central bank and the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System. We believe that the company will do so, and by February 14, 2014, we are all very optimistic and looking forward for a gift from the banking industry.

“The cost of the project is above $50m and the banks, in their wisdom and in line with their collaborative efforts, are going to be sharing the cost of the project, and no customer is going to be charged for this project.”

Explaining the reason for the project, Sanusi said it would help to provide a single biometric database that would serve the purpose of authentication as well as address the issues of money laundering, fraud, credit extension and financial inclusion.

He said, “The vision is that this will go beyond the banks and it is a very tight deadline that I have set for the committee and the committee has discussed with Dermalog; and in three months, we can officially say that every single Nigerian bank is connected to the system; and hopefully in the coming months, we will expect every customer of every branch of every bank in Nigeria to have complied to this, but it goes beyond the banking system.

“We have about a thousand microfinance banks; we have customers of pension fund administrators; we have customers of insurance companies; we have people who deal with the stock market, and the vision for this is that everyone that deals with the financial system should have his biometric data captured, and this will be used for identification, verification and authentication.”

Sanusi said the project would not have any negative impact on the national identity card project, adding that the biometric database of the banking sector would help to complement the Federal Government’s identity management project.

He said, “For a long time, we have been waiting for the national identity card system and progress is being made, and I will like to use this opportunity to let everybody understand that the banking industry project is not in any way incompatible with the national identity process.”

Davido's bouncer causes Havoc at Nu Grotto night club

Davido and his team left for Nu Grotto night club on the Island to have fun but it all turned out bitter. It was gathered that Davido was having fun with his friends when his ATM card fell off from him. The club Dj, JD who saw the card picked it up and wanted to return it to him, but his bouncer prevented him. JD got angry and called the bouncer names. Apparently, the bouncer couldn’t take it and landed some hot slaps on JD whose height is 4’4, while he is 6’1 and that was how the whole ‘war’ started.

The 4’4 JD broke a bottle and stabbed the 6’1 bouncer immediately. The bouncer who was already bleeding got hold of some bottles and started flinging it around in the club apparently when JD escaped. Some properties where damaged and some fun seekers also got injured in the process. One of them, Mrs Anderson who goes by the name, @Isnitched4Oreos on twitter and has a very interesting twitter page which most of you will love tweeted at Davido the following morning, about how she’s already working so hard to sue him.

HOPE:unilorin dropout due to pregnancy at 18 emerges Best graduating student in Bells University

Read Aishat’s story and let’s hear what you think.

Seven years after an unwanted pregnancy forced her to drop out of the University of Ilorin, Aishat Farooq emerged the best graduating student of the Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State. When Aishat Farooq gained admission into the University of Ilorin at 15, to study Zoology, little did she know that she was not going to be an alumnus of the institution.

That was in 2003.Despite the fact that she was a high flyer in her first two years in UNILORIN, the now 25-year-old indigene of Ilorin West-Local Government Area of Kwara State got distracted along the line. She played the campus love game and got a shocking result: she got pregnant. It was in 2006 and in her third year. She was pregnant for a fellow student whom she had been dating. She was disappointed in herself and thought the whole world was crashing on her.  Yet, she vowed not to terminate the pregnancy.

Although she wanted to continue her studies in the university,  she became disillusioned and dropped out at 18. She sought consolation in trading. But her father, Mr. Shehu Farooq, who believed that his daughter’s academic prowess should not be wasted,  was determined to get her back on the academic track.Today, Aishat has a different story to tell.On Saturday, she stood tall among her peers at the 5th convocation ceremony of Bells University, Ota, Ogun State,  where she emerged the overall best graduating student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.93.“

The rebel in me won,” she declared while giving the valedictory address on behalf of the 208 graduating students of the university.“I hope my story will inspire at least one person to change his or her circumstance. I was pregnant at 18 and by 19 I was already a mother. I had disappointed my father who believed so much in me. He had such big dreams for me and feared the dreams would become unfulfilled,” she added.Breaking the news of the pregnancy to her father,  who was at the time based in the northern part of the country, was not easy. Aishat’s mother, Fatima, who stayed in Lagos with the family, did not break the “sad news” to the man until the lady was almost due.

The mum feared her husband would be too angry. Fatima narrated to our correspondent:“Looking back, we knew her to be very brilliant. But all of a sudden she got pregnant. Though her father and I were always discussing on the telephone, I hid it from him. Whenever he said he would  be coming to Lagos to visit us, I  would quickly chip it in that I would  like to be the one to visit.

So, I ensured I was the one always visiting him.“That was how I managed the situation until the pregnancy was eight months. But even when we broke the news to him, he felt really bad. Although there was nothing he could do, he couldn’t go out for three days.

Nick Minaj defends posting revealing Halloween costume online

Nicki Minaj tells Power 105.1FM’s Breakfast Club...
I’ve just been feeling a lot more comfortable, and its like if you’re feeling yourself, you might as well show the world. Like f*** the world. Sometimes you just hold so much back and its like, ‘Look, I’m a girl and I won’t be able to do this when I am 60 years old, so I am going to freaking do it now.’ I didn’t know it was going to be that big of a deal. Because I swear my friendShericka bought me that costume 2 hours before I put it on. My stylist couldn’t come through with the costume that I was going to wear. I was going to have this cheetah thing and paint my face and then I couldn’t get it, so I was like ‘Well, let me just get any old thing.’ And that was the any old thing.
